inane rant

Bright Lights, Mini City

Why are the little tiny lights on household appliances so damn bright? Things like Apple's Airport Express, the air conditioner, the space heater...these things could all serve as beacons to passing ships. It's like a mini city - it's never really dark when you shut off all the lights.
Is this necessary?
